Iran Proposes Deal to End War with U.S.

(MENAFN) Iran has put forward a new proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and bring the war to a close — deliberately separating the nuclear issue into a later phase in a bid to break the current diplomatic deadlock, media reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.

An unnamed US official and two additional sources told the outlet that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi outlined the plan during successive visits to Islamabad, briefing Pakistani, Egyptian, Turkish, and Qatari mediators. Araghchi reportedly acknowledged that Iran's leadership has yet to reach internal agreement on how to respond to Washington's nuclear demands.

Washington has maintained an uncompromising position, demanding that Tehran fully dismantle its nuclear program and surrender all enriched uranium stockpiles.

The proposal, relayed to the White House through Pakistani intermediaries, centers on halting or formally ending hostilities and lifting the US blockade on the Strait of Hormuz — a vital maritime chokepoint through which roughly 20% of the world's seaborne oil trade passes. Under the reported framework, nuclear negotiations would only commence after the blockade is lifted.

Al-Mayadeen reported that Tehran has outlined a three-stage roadmap: first, ending hostilities and securing binding guarantees against future attacks on Iran and Lebanon; second, establishing a new legal framework for governing the Strait of Hormuz in coordination with Oman; and third, addressing the nuclear question.

The nuclear dispute between Washington and Tehran carries deep historical weight. The Obama administration required more than two years of intensive multilateral negotiations to produce the landmark 2015 nuclear agreement — only for President Donald Trump to unilaterally withdraw the United States from the deal in 2018.

The fresh overture follows the breakdown of US-Iran talks in Islamabad, which were launched in the wake of a tentative ceasefire announcement but failed to yield any concrete progress. On Saturday, diplomatic momentum suffered a further blow when Trump abruptly canceled a planned visit to the Pakistani capital by envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, declaring, "You're not going to be making any more 18-hour flights to sit around talking about nothing."

According to media reports, Iran has conditioned any agreement on a firm US non-aggression guarantee, the lifting of all sanctions, sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, and formal recognition of its right to uranium enrichment — flatly rejecting American and Israeli assertions that Tehran is pursuing nuclear weapons capability.
