South Africa strengthens restrictions to decrease Delta variant cases


(MENAFN)Since the highly spreadable virus, Delta coronavirus variant has been registered in over 90 countries and regions around the world, many countries have increased their restrictions to limit the expansion of the Delta coronavirus variant, which was first discovered in India.

According to Tulio de Oliveira, director of the KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform at a press conference, the Delta variant that was leading the new cases to be registered in South Africa, is the major reason to South Africa’s third wave of global pandemic.

Data by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases stated that South Africa, worst-affected nation in terms of coronavirus cases and deaths in Africa, registered over 15,000 new cases on Sunday counting122 deaths, to lead the national total of confirmed cases to reach 1,928,897.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced in a televised speech on Sunday, that South Africa is going to reach lockdown Level 4 for two weeks with strict restrictions to stop the increase in cases.
