Qatar- HBKU's College of law launches online sports law course

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) As the world-class provider of legal education, the College of Law at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) has launched its first online course via the edX learning platform.

Navigating Legal and Commercial Aspects of Sports introduces a broad audience to the dynamic and evolving world of sports law. Students in the course will develop an understanding of key legal and commercial aspects of sports while applying them to actual and hypothetical scenarios involving teams and athletes.

The College of Law faculty, all of whom are leading academics in their respective fields, guide students through the eight-week course. The course starts with an overview of sports law, which features College of Law Professor Zachary Calo, who teaches sports law at HBKU and is a member of the roster of arbitrators of the Qatar Sports Arbitration Foundation.

Thereafter, other College of Law faculty, including Associate Professor Damilola Olawuyi and Assistant Professor Barry Solaiman as well as Dean Susan L Karamanian, address specific subjects.  These include contracts; environment, health and safety; labour rights; and ethics, corruption, and transparency. Professor Calo concludes the course with a module on dispute resolution, to which College of Law Professor Ilias Bantekas also contributed.

Enrolment for future sessions is free of charge with each lesson conducted in English. In order to get the best out of the course, students are encouraged to dedicate between one to three hours per week to their studies.

Speaking after the launch, Dean Karamanian (pictured),  said: ''We''re delighted to be adding to HBKU''s growing portfolio of edX course offerings. Navigating Legal and Commercial Aspects of Sports not only reflects Qatar''s rising profile in sports law and management but also the rapid internationalisation of the business of sport. In doing so, sport has become subject to an increasingly complex, and often misunderstood, web of legal standards. This course untangles this web and highlights how sports law is applied, both in the national and international context.
