The Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has imposed a ban under Section 144 on illegal mining and placer gold extraction along the banks of the Indus River and the Kabul River in various districts of the province.

According to a notification issued by the Home and Tribal Affairs Department, the ban will remain in force for 60 days in the districts of Swabi, Nowshera, Kohat, and Karak, as well as adjoining areas.

The order, issued by Additional Chief Secretary Home Akramullah Khan, stated that the decision was taken in light of reports from relevant departments and consultations held during the 37th meeting of the provincial cabinet.

The statement said that ongoing illegal mining activities along the riverbanks were causing severe environmental damage, polluting water, and affecting natural landscapes, while also posing risks to the health and safety of local communities.

Authorities have expressed concerns that such activities could disturb law and order and lead to disputes among local groups.

Furthermore, the transportation of illegally extracted minerals and the smuggling of fuel used in excavation have further complicated the situation.

The official statement added that certain organized groups possess financial resources and may resist enforcement actions, potentially endangering the lives of civilians and law enforcement personnel.

The provincial cabinet has directed the Mines and Minerals Department to ensure coordinated and effective action against illegal mining.

In this regard, district administrations and police have been instructed to provide full cooperation, and additional personnel may be deployed if necessary.

Under the order, district administrations and police have been authorized to take legal action, including the confiscation of machinery, vehicles, and other equipment used in violations.

Authorities have warned that strict legal action will be taken against violators under the relevant provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code.
