Amb. Al-Ghunaim: Kuwait commends role of UN Human Rights Council
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) GENEVA, Feb 22 (KUNA) -- Kuwait''s Permanent Representative to the UN and international organizations'' headquarters in Geneva Ambassador Jamal Al-Ghunaim commended Saturday the role and efforts carried out by the UN Human Rights Council worldwide.
This statement to KUNA came in preparation for the council''s meetings between February 24 and March 20, featuring the participation of 30 UN humanitarian rights expects discussing over 100 reports.
Al-Ghunaim affirmed that the council''s meeting touched on important human rights matters that need to be thoroughly addressed by the international community.
He indicated that the State of Kuwait would be keen on following the council''s report on the human rights of the Palestinian people.
The council''s report and its recommendations -- carried out by an independent international committee -- will be highlighted during the meetings, said Ambassador Al-Ghunaim who revealed that the status of Palestinian occupied lands, including East Jerusalem, and the database implicating companies operating in illegal Jewish settlements would be discussed.
Kuwait, said Al-Ghunaim, is interested in following on international reports highlighting the plight of the Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar as well as the situation in Yemen, Iran, Libya, South Sudan, and in other region suffering from human rights violations.
He added that international accords on children and the disabled rights would also feature during the upcoming meetings along with efforts to counter racial discrimination.
The Kuwaiti diplomat also noted that discussions on the environment, protection of cultural rights, defending human rights during and after crises, the rights for food and privacy in the digital age would also be on the agenda.
The annual report of the council will be presented during the course of the event.
The UN Human Rights Council was established in 2006 gathering some 47 states under its umbrella. The entity adopts its resolutions via a majority of votes with no member having the ability to veto. (end)
