Qatar- International Marmi Falconry Festival concludes


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) H H the Amir's Personal Representative, H H Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, attended yesterday the award ceremony of Al Mazayen competition for falcons, in the conclusion of the 11th Marmi Falconry Festival. 

The festival was held for one month from the first day of January until the first day of February. The ceremony was attended by a number of their Excellencies, Sheikhs and Ministers, heads of diplomatic missions accredited to the state, the board of directors of Al Gannas Association and a large number of falconers from Qatar and from the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and guests of the festival.

H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, the sponsor of the festival, crowned the winners of the Al Mazayen Competition, which had over 60 participants. First place went Sheikh Ahmed bin Abdulaziz bin Saoud Al Thani, with prize money of QR700,000. The organising committee also held the draw for the public for the Lexus car, with Abdullah Masoud from the audience winning. 

Head of the competition's organizing committee Abdullah Hamad Al Mahshadi said that this year saw strong performances, giving the judges a difficult time determining the top three participants in each category. He said that judges award 40 percent of their grade based on the colour of the falcon, 15 percent for its back, 15 percent for the head. The three factors comprise the bulk of the grading.

For his part, Minister of Municipality and Environment H E Eng. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaei praised the efforts of the organizing competition. His Excellency was speaking to the press on the sidelines of his participation in its concluding day. 

Director General of Katara Dr. Khaled bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti emphasized the success of the 11th edition of Marmi. He added that the event has become one of the most important of its kind in the country, due to the role it plays in maintaining Qatar's heritage and identity. He congratulated the winners of the festival's various competitions, expressing hope that future editions will be just as successful. 

Former minister of justice Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanem said that the festival is considered one of the most successful of its kind in the world, due to the variety of events it has and the role it plays in educating the younger generations about the region's heritage. He pointed out that the State of Qatar is one of the most committed to preserving its heritage and promoting it through festivals.
