UK Announces Major Air Defense Support Package for Ukraine
(MENAFN) The United Kingdom announced a £500 million ($681 million) package on Thursday to supply Ukraine with air defense missiles and systems aimed at protecting critical infrastructure and homes from Russian attacks.
Included in the funding is £150 million earmarked for NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), a program designed to speed up the delivery of air defense interceptors.
Defense Secretary John Healey emphasized the purpose of the support, saying it will “help Ukrainians defend against Putin’s relentless drone and missile attacks.”
Under the package, the UK will provide 1,000 additional Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMMs), 1,200 air defense missiles, and 200,000 rounds of artillery ammunition through the Air Defence Consortium (ADC).
Healey added, “As we approach the fifth year of Putin’s full-scale invasion, the UK and our allies are more committed than ever to supporting Ukraine.”
At a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG) in Brussels on Thursday, five countries pledged to contribute to the purchase of American weapons listed under Ukraine’s Priority Requirements List (PURL). NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte acknowledged the support, thanking the UK, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Lithuania for their contributions.
