Can turmeric help treat cancer? A recent study analyzed whether turmeric may be useful for treating cancer. The authors said that there are many challenges to beat before actually making it useful for cancer treatment.

Turmeric is a flowering plant and a member of the ginger family. Native to India and Southeast Asia, the roots of turmeric are used in cooking.

Mostly, medical researchers target turmeric chemical a polyphenol called diferuloylmethane for their research. Diferuloylmethane is more commonly called curcumin.

Many researchers have tested curcumin against a number of symptoms and conditions such as metabolic syndrome, arthritis, inflammation, liver disease, obesity, and neurodegenerative diseases.

In the recent review, featured in the journal Nutrients, scientists focused on cell signaling pathways that have a role in cancer's growth and development. The team investigated how turmeric might influence cancer growth.

Over the years, researchers have developed many treatments for cancer. The authors said that the research for innovative and more effective drugs for cancer treatment is still incomplete.

In the current review, the investigators focused on research involving breast cancer, cancers of the blood, lung cancer, and cancers of the digestive system.

"Curcumin is not immune from side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea, headache, and yellow stool. Moreover, it showed poor bioavailability due to the fact of low absorption, rapid metabolism, and systemic elimination that limit its efficacy in diseases treatment. Further studies and clinical trials in humans are needed to validate curcumin as an effective anticancer agent," the authors note.
