KUWAIT, Jan 8 (KUNA) --



1930 -- Hamad Abdullah Al-Saqer, Chairman of Kuwait's first Shura Council in April 1921, passed away. He was a famous dates' merchant, and donated a plot of land for construction of Al-Amiri Hospital and another for building Al-Ahmadiyah School.
1955 -- The department of social affairs began issuance of identity cards for non-Kuwaiti civil servants. 1959 -- Khalaf Ahmad Al-Khalaf was appointed Amir of Failaka Island. He is later appointed minister of electricity and water in 1979. 1967 -- Al-Sahel Sports Club was founded.
1999 -- Emanuel Ghareeb, a Kuwaiti national and a theology scholar, was named the first bishop of the Anglican Church in Kuwait. 2002 -- The State of Kuwait was elected chair of the Arab Farmers' Organization.
2002 -- The National Assembly turned down an interpellation motion submitted by MP Hussein Al-Qallaf against Minister of Justice and Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Ahmad Baqer.
2003 -- The new building of the Petrochemical Industries Company, founded in 1963, was inaugurated in Al-Subahiya.
2007 -- The first edition of the local newspaper, "Alam Al-Youm," was issued. Its chief editor was Abdulhamid Al-Da'ass.
2008 -- The National Assembly discussed an interpellation motion filed against Minister of Education and Minister of Higher Education Nouriya Al-Subeeh. A vote of confidence was requested, and on January 22, the vote reinstates confidence in the minister.
2012 -- Interior Ministry confiscated 2.5 million liters of smuggled diesel worth KD 500,000.
2012 -- Ministry of Public Works announced completion of vehicles and Train Bridge within Mubarak AlKabeer port project northeast of Kuwait city. (end) mb
