(MENAFN- Asia Times) A 28-year-old Indonesian migrant worker in Taiwan who killed a compatriot at a Christmas party last year was charged with murder in the Taichung District Prosecutors Office on Tuesday.
Vic, the accused, who uses only one name like many of his countrymen, entered Taiwan on May 18, 2016, and within one week, ran away from his employer and became an illegal migrant on May 24, 2016, the United Daily News reported.
According to an investigation by prosecutors, he attended a dinner with compatriots at a workers' shelter in Heping district in eastern Taichung on December 25, 2018. During the dinner, a man named Ali accused Vic of being a motorcycle thief.
This angered Vic and he confronted Ali, who had armed himself with a knife. Vic knocked the knife out of Ali's hand, picked it up and stabbed Ali in the head and neck, causing massive bleeding.
People at the dinner immediately called for assistance and transferred the injured man to a junction on Provincial Highway 7, where he was picked up by an ambulance and taken to Lishan Health Clinic and from there to China Medical University Hospital. However, he was pronounced dead during the second transfer.
By January 4, 2019, police managed to track down and arrest Vic in Chiayi County. He admitted to stabbing Ali who he said had falsely accused him of stealing.
With evidence from witness statements, autopsy reports and photos of the scene, Taichung District Prosecutors Office on May 21 decided to press a murder charge against Vic.
