Nigeria alerts from fresh Cholera epidemic in displacement camps

(MENAFN) An international humanitarian organization alerted on Monday of the shortage of basic sanitation facilities in overcrowded sheltering camps will trigger new cholera outbreak in northeast Nigeria.

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) demanded response to stop the upcoming risk in the northeast part of Nigeria, which involves camps for people distressed by evacuations as a result of incessant attacks by the terror group Boko Haram.

Eric Batonon, NRC's country director for Nigeria confirmed: "If the camps are not decongested and sanitation facilities improved, cholera will inevitably return, and vulnerable displaced people will bear the brunt of the epidemic again."

Data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control revealed that in 2018, 50,719 suspected cholera cases from 30 states were recorded.
