Israeli Airstrikes Kill Eight People Near Beirut
(MENAFN) Israeli airstrikes killed eight people — among them two children — in areas south of Beirut on Wednesday, the Lebanese Health Ministry announced, in the latest escalation despite a fragile ceasefire still nominally in force.
According to a ministry statement, three successive Israeli strikes hit the coastal localities of Barja, Jiyeh, and Saadiyat, situated along the vital highway connecting Beirut to Sidon and the broader southern Lebanon region.
The strikes compound a devastating toll that has mounted steadily since March 2. Lebanese officials report that Israeli attacks have now killed more than 2,840 people, wounded over 8,690, and uprooted more than 1.6 million residents — roughly one-fifth of the country's entire population.
Wednesday's bloodshed comes despite a ceasefire announced on April 17 and subsequently extended through May 17. The Israeli army has continued launching daily strikes across Lebanon and exchanging fire with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, raising urgent questions over the durability of the truce and the prospects for any lasting halt to hostilities.
