RABAT, 31st March, 2019 (WAM) -- Pope Francis has praised the international conference organised by the Forum for the Promotion of Peace in Muslim Societies, that was held in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh in 2016.

The pope's comments came as he was visiting the Hassan Mosque in Rabat, with Morocco's King Mohammed VI, as part of his historic visit to the north African country.

"The International Conference on the rights of religious minorities in Muslim countries, held in Marrakesh, has condemned exploitation of religion for discrimination, and encouraged the participation of minorities in society through full citizenship," Pope Francis said in his speech.

He added that "the Marrakesh declaration called for overcoming the concept of religious minority in order to promote the importance of citizenship, and to recognise the value of the human who should be pivotal to every legal system.

The Forum for the Promotion of Peace in Muslim Societies, which is based in Abu Dhabi, was held on 25-27 January 2016 under the patronage of King Mohammed VI, in cooperation with the Moroccan ministry of Endowment and Islamic Affairs.
