The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), responsible for the welfare of Palestine refugees, has thanked Qatar for the generous support its is offering for the refugees across the Middle East.

UNRWA tweeted a post showing a group of students holding up a banner in Arabic saying 'Shukran Qatar (thank you Qatar).

'UNRWA is starting the year strong, thanks to the @qatar_fund #QFFD! Qatar's generous multiyear support of US$ 16 million will help provide education, health and social services to 5.4 million refugees across the Middle East in 2019 -2020!, they said along with the picture.

Qatar Fund For Development (QFFD) and UNRWA had signed a contribution agreement to finance the core resources of the United Nations Organization on the sidelines of Doha Forum 2018 held last month in Doha.

The agreement was signed by Khalifa bin Jassim Al Kuwari, the Director-General of the QFFD, and Pierre Krähenbühl, the Commissioner-General of UNRWA. The agreement aims to support the basic resources of UNRWA with an amount of $16m, in order to strengthen UNRWA's pivotal role in protecting the rights of Palestinian refugees and helping them obtain quality education and basic health services in Jerusalem, the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.

The Commissioner-General welcomed Qatar's commitment to Palestine refugees. 'In 2018, Qatar made a major difference in enabling UNRWA to open the schools on time for 530,000 boys and girls studying in our 711 schools. This will be fondly remembered. The agreement signed with QFFD is an important step in the crucial effort to stabilize UNRWA's financial situation by ensuring increased predictability of funding. I am deeply grateful for Qatar's trust and partnership.
