Over 295,000 Syrian refugees return home in '18


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ANKARA, Jan 5 (KUNA) - The Turkish Ministry of Interior said that more than 295,000 Syrian refugees returned to their homes in liberated areas last year after two military operations conducted by the Turkish army in northern Syria.
The Turkish security services also arrested some 270,000 illegal immigrants on their way to Europe in 2018, the Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.
Up to 55,894 of the detained immigrants were extradited to their home countries, the statement added.
The Turkish army, backed by local Syrian armed groups, launched the Operation Euphrates Shield against the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) and the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) between August 24, 2016 and March 29, 2017.
They also conducted the Operation Olive Branch against the so-called Islamic State (IS) in January 2018. (end) rs.gb
