NATO military cmte to discuss development in Mideast

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Jan 5 (KUNA) -- The Military Committee, NATO's highest Military Authority, will discuss the challenging security environment on NATO's southern flank and the Alliance's contribution to the stabilisation of the region during its meeting in Brussels on 16 and 17 January.
The meeting on the level of NATO chiefs of defence will discuss the Global Coalition to Defeat IS and NATO's role in Iraq during 2018, according to a NATO press release Friday.
The first session of the two-day meeting will focus on Europe's southern neighbourhood. It will include a briefing on the Middle East and North Africa region taking into consideration the wider global context.
This session will pave the way for further discussions on Projecting Stability Initiatives, Fight against Terrorism, the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS and the ongoing NATO Training and Capacity Building in Iraq, it noted.
They will also review NATO's Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan. General Petr Pavel, Chairman of the Military Committee, will preside over the sessions.
NATO's Military Committee meets twice a year at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, at the level of Chiefs of Defence to discuss NATO operations and missions. In addition, once a year, they meet in a NATO member country. (end) nk.mt
