Security surveillance in Turkey's coal mines to be stepped up

Turkey will step up security surveillance in coal mines, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources said in a message Nov. 16.

All coal mines in Turkey will be classified into three categories – 'red', 'yellow' and 'blue', said the message.

The 'red' category will include coal mines of high risk. These mines will be checked every three months, according to the message.

Turkey has faced a number of mine accidents in recent years.

The most recent worst mine accident in Turkey occurred in the city of Soma on May 13, 2014 leaving 301 people dead and 486 injured. That time, the police detained 25 people over the accident.

In total, there are 740 coal mines in Turkey.
