Jordan- 2,100 food facilities closed down on safety grounds


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Oct 17 (Petra) –– Food safety inspectors have shut down or suspended 2,100 food facilities and outlets in a nationwide crackdown on violations of safety and hygiene standards, which began since the start of the year, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

It said in a statement that its teams had carried out 35,260 inspections across the Kingdom and seized and destroyed 2,344 tons of foodstuff, which were unfit for human consumption or did not meet Jordanian standards and specifications.

It said that the Amman Governorate topped the list with 57 per cent of the closures, followed by Zarqa and Irbid, at 21 per cent each, adding that 676 food stores had been referred to the prosecutor general and that 22,000 warnings were served to other facilities.

The campaign mainly targeted popular restaurants, shawarma outlets, canteens and cafeterias of schools, orphan and elderly care homes and hospitals, it said, adding that intensive inspections are currently underway of olive presses and olive oil sale places, as well as private food production facilities.

The Food and Drug Administration urged the public to report any complaints or observations regarding food safety.
