Qatar renews vow to meet challenges of education

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Qatar has reiterated its commitment to working together with United Nations agencies, partners and institutions to address the challenges of education in emergencies, economic uncertainty caused by conflicts, mass migration, increasing inequality, rapid technological development and other factors.

This came in an inaugural speech delivered by HE the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad al-Muraikhi at the high-level working breakfast organised by the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations in New York and the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) on "Partnership and Means of Co-operation between governments, multilateral assistance organisations, UN agencies and civil society organisations in education", which was held on the sidelines of the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The minister stressed that education in Qatar is a collective need and a right and key to the well-being of societies, referring in this regard to the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE), which will focus on coexistence and partnership in the promotion of education during its 2017 session, to be held in Doha from November 14-16, he noted.
The high-level working breakfast provided an opportunity to bring together member-states, relevant United Nations agencies, education institutions, civil society organisations and the private sector to promote partnership in the implementation of the fourth objective of sustainable development goals for investment in education.
It also reviewed the successful elements and models of existing, multisectoral and innovative partnerships in education and highlighted the challenges to co-operation among various development actors, including government aid and multilateral development banks.
Participants also discussed the role that national governments can play in education.
The high-level working breakfast was held in the presence of the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kenya HE Amina Mohamed, the Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) HE Anthony Lake, Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization ( Unesco) HE Irina Bokova, and the High Representative of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations HE Nasser bin Abdulaziz Al-Nasr.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Education Above All Fahd Al Sulaiti, and Director General of Qatar Fund for Development Khalifa bin Jassim Al-Kuwari, as well as a number of prominent international experts and personalities involved in education took part in the discussions.
