Daesh commander among 4 killed in drone strike


(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): An Islamic State (Daesh) leader was among four insurgents killed in a CIA-operated drone strike in South Waziristan Agency, bordering Afghanistaninfo-icon.

The raid came hours before a bipartisan US Senate delegation visited the volatile tribal region on Monday, Dawn quoted unnamed sources as saying.

The drone fired two missiles at a vehicle carrying commander Pir Agha of the Islamic State group and his three aides in Marghalan village, killing all of them on the spot.

Senator John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee who led the team, stressed the importance of continued cooperation between the US and Pakistaninfo-icon on regional peace.

During his visit to South Waziristan, McCain said in a video statement the trip helped understand €œchallenges, successes and remaining challenges that require close coordination and assistance from us and with us€.

Senator Elizabeth Warren echoed his view, saying it was important €œto have strong partnership with Pakistan in this fight. That is the only way we will succeed€.

During a meeting with the delegation, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said a strong partnership among the US, Afghanistan and Pakistan was €œa prerequisite€ for sustainable peace in Afghanistan. He emphasised the importance of the Quadrilateral Coordination Group (QCG) for facilitating Afghan reconciliation.
