(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) Family members of the 162 people aboard a missing AirAsia plane expressed shock Tuesday after officials confirmed that bodies and debris found at sea off Borneo island were from the flight, dpa reported.
'To the families of the passengers and the crew, I feel your loss, and we all pray that the families be given strength in this trying time,' Indonesian President Joko Widodo said at Juanda Airport in Surabaya, where relatives of passengers had gathered to hear news about their loved ones.
AirAsia Indonesia flight QZ8501 disappeared from radar Sunday morning over the Java Sea, after taking off from Surabaya in Indonesia's East Java province en route to Singapore.
Search and rescue chief Bambang Sulistyo confirmed the flight's demise after floating debris, a possible fuselage, and several corpses were sighted in waters 100 nautical miles off Indonesia's Central Kalimantan province.
Widodo ordered rescue agencies to recover the bodies of victims, and Air Force spokesman Hadi Tjahjanto said they would be taken to Surabaya for identification.
