S. Korean President Urges N. Korea to Improve Human Rights

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Seoul September 25 (QNA) - South Korean President Park Geun-hye has urged North Korea to improve its human rights conditions.

During her speech at the general debate of the 69th UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday President Park stressed that North Korea must take measures to meet the recommendations laid out by the UN Commission of Inquiry (COI) according to Korea's (KBS WORLD) website.

The comments came just a day after US Secretary of State John Kerry pressured North Korea on the rights violations while hosting a ministerial meeting on the issue. At the event in New York Kerry discussed the COI report in February that said North Korean leaders are responsible for "widespread systematic and gross" violations of human rights.

The South Korean president also called for the denuclearization of North Korea pledging once again that the South will assist the North's economic development if the communist regime gives up its nuclear ambition.

President Park then asked for the UN member countries' support for her plans to build a peace park in the heavily armed demilitarized zone (DMZ) that divides the two Koreas. (QNA)
