IMPACT Justice to host alternative dispute resolution and sensitization lecture in Barbados


(MENAFN- Caribbean News Now) BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – The Canadian government funded Improved Access to Justice in the Caribbean (IMPACT Justice) project will be hosting a lecture on June 22nd, 2019 to officially launch its Alternative Dispute Resolution sensitization campaign for Barbados. This lecture will be held at the Valley Resource Centre, Glebe, St George at 10 am.

The event will commence with remarks by Professor Velma Newton, Regional Project Director of the IMPACT Justice Project followed by a presentation from Sir Marston Gibson, KA, Chief Justice of Barbados on the use of mediation as an alternative to litigation.

Other guest speakers will be Ann Diaz, Mediation Coordinator, University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus (Trinidad); Terry Ranglin, Trainer, Dispute Resolution Foundation (Jamaica); and Patricia Warner, Senior Education Officer, Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training (Barbados).

The lecture will include a review of the experiences of Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago with the establishment and use of Community Mediation Centres and plans for the introduction of a similar regime in Barbados. Also, to be discussed will be restorative practices and its use to address instances of bullying and violence in schools and plans to institutionalise the use of this mechanisms through a strategic partnership with the Erdiston Teachers' Training College.

IMPACT Justice has as its ultimate objective the improvement of access to justice benefiting men, women, boy, girls, youth and businesses across the 13 CARICOM countries in which the Project is being implemented. One of the ways the Project has sought to reach this objective is through the promotion of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) techniques to assist persons in resolving their disputes.

Two of the ADR mechanisms focused on by the Project are community mediation and restorative practices, which have proven to be effective in addressing instances of violence and conflict.
