Those who bought residential plots in Dhakoli, a small town in Zirakpur, Punjab, are facing an unexpected trouble: a constant smell of dead bodies.

Nearby villagers have started reusing funeral sheds in the decade-old cremation ground in Dhakoli, troubling residents.

The smell of burning bodies and tears of wailing families have made living there impossible. Residents now want the cremation ground to be relocated.

The funeral sheds being used by villagers were decommissioned, but it hasn't stopped villagers from cremating their dead.

The residents alleged that two-four bodies are cremated every month, and at odd hours.

The villagers also throw the ash at a nearby nullah.

The pyre's smell forces residents to shut their doors and windows; and weeping families push them to depression.

Apart from smell and cries, residents of Guru Nanak Nagar locality have concerns because the bodies cremated have no records.

They worry the sheds are being used to cremate bodies of murder victims.

Till the ground is relocated, residents want authorities to deploy officials to maintain records of bodies being cremated.

Those who spent their life-savings on flats there are hoping for quick action.

"By next week, the civic body will take a decision to shift cremation ground. As and when new cremation ground is ready, both these sheds will be shut and villagers asked to use the new facility for funerals," said Zirakpur Municipal Council President Kulwinder Sohi.

The villagers maintain they have an emotional attachment to the cremation ground as their ancestors were burnt there.

They don't want to change anything because of people who shifted to the area only recently.

But a resident said, "We have spent lakhs on our houses for a comfortable and pleasant lifestyle. The problem here is severe and needs urgent attention of the authorities."
