Army Chief: Eager Lion helps exchange of military expertise

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Apr 24 (Petra) –– Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff, Maj. Gen. Mahmoud Freihat, said Tuesday that the Jordanian armed forces' restructuring programme, under the direct instructions of the Supreme Commander, His Majesty King Abdullah II, is to ensure their ability to counter any security threats by working with allies and partners.

He was addressing a seminar of senior commanders held on the sidelines of the "Eager Lion 2018" exercise, which was attended by Maj. Gen. Jon Mott, Director of Exercises and Training at the US Central Command, and top military commanders from more than 20 participating countries.

Holding the "Eager Lion" exercise and seminars, he said, would largely help in the exchange of expertise and thoughts, as they reflect concerted efforts and joint coordination that underscore the deep ties among participating countries. He thanked the United States for the support it offers in this field.

Mott, for his part, spoke of the need to seize such an opportunity to develop joint action "so that we can defend ourselves against our enemies in all circumstances, and with all types of ground, air, sea and electronic defence." He said border security would curb the proliferation of extremist groups and that working in a partnership would bring security to the region.

The seminar tackled a host of subjects and papers, mainly areas out of government control (grey zones), aerial threats such as missiles, drones and the return of foreign fighters, which requires unifying efforts to counter such perils and coordination among all countries.

Speakers at the discussion pointed to challenges posed to countries by border security, the possibility of returning foreign fighters to their countries and the threats that will be reflected on these countries, as well as the challenges posed by refugees to host nations in the security, education, health, economic and social aspects and the ensuing psychological and moral consequences.

The seminar was attended by commanders from the United States, Italy, Pakistan, Belgium, Kuwait, Lebanon, Australia, Britain, Japan, Iraq, UAE, Germany, Greece, Kenya, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Oman, Lebanon, Egypt, Qatar, Bahrain in addition to Jordan.
