Armenia: Serzh Sargsyan steps down as prime minister

(MENAFN) Serzh Sargsyan has stepped down as Armenia's prime minister after the country was hit with massive protests opposing his election.

The prime minister issued a statement, declaring "the street movement is against my tenure. I am fulfilling your demand."

However, the date of when his resignation is set to take effect is yet to be known.
The declaration comes shortly after opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan was set free, after his detainment following a failure in dialogues with the prime minister.

The Armenian prime minister stated that he was "addressing all citizens of the Republic of Armenia... for the last time as leader of the country."

In his statement which the Armen Press news agency released, he admitted "Nikol Pashinyan was right. I was wrong, the situation has several solutions, but I will not take any of them... I am leaving office of the country's leader, of Prime Minister."
