African Republic: clashes kill one UN peacekeeper,wound 8


(MENAFN) The United Nations declared that a Rwandan peacekeeper has died as another eight have been injured in Central African Republic.

The spokesman for the secretary-general stated that the victims occurred amid "an exchange of fire with armed elements" in the capital, Bangui.

The U.N. added that the incident took place two days following the UN peacekeeping processes and army forces have carried out operation in the vast Muslim neighborhood of PK5 in order to detain armed criminal rings.

Jean-Pierre Lacroix,UN peacekeeping chief is on a trip to the Central African Republic which suffers extreme poverty, and had witnessed fatal interreligious and intercommunal clashes for five years.
