Oman- Muscat Municipality cracks whip on street vendors

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Muscat Municipality is making strenuous efforts to control the random sale by illegal mobile vendors through inspection campaigns in public and residential areas and shops etc. Vendors who sell their wares in unspecified locations violating regulations and laws without a permit are illegal. This is quite widespread in various locations in the Muscat governorate.

It also affects the regulated domestic economy as it leads to unfair competition with legal traders licensed by the municipality. In addition to the congestion it causes with stalls and carts being placed haphazardly, there is also the risk of selling rotten foodstuff which can harm public health. Most food poisoning cases occur due to poor food storage in places that do not meet the approved health requirements.

Muscat Municipality has issued a decision to amend certain provisions of the health requirements for public health-related activities, which include decision No 185/2017 adding an item to the health requirements regulations for the practice of a mobile café. It includes four main articles, clarifying the requirements of the site, the vehicle on which the mobile café is located, the requirements of the licensee to engage in the activity, and authorised foods.

The municipality has also coordinated with various government bodies including the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Riyada to find solutions for the phenomenon of mobile vendors. The municipality has distributed circulars and publications to street vendors to organise their sites, obtain the necessary licences and implement health requirements and carry out trade activities without any hurdles.
