Increasing kidnap incidents worry Kunduzis

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): The residents of northern Kunduz province say well-off people have stopped sending their children to school and tuition fearing their kidnapping, a growing phenomenon.

The residents report four abduction incidents and one murder in captivity in Kunduz during the past one month alone.

A 17-year-old boy, who had been kidnapped by unknown kidnappers from Kunduz City one month ago, was found dead on Wednesday evening.

Rahimullah, a resident, told Pajhwok Afghan News: €œWe have been living in a constant fear due to Taliban and kidnappers. The government should prevent kidnappings and injustices. A young man was kidnapped and killed after his family failed to arrange the ransom money,€ he said.

Haji Mansour, a businessman, warned if kidnapping incidents did not stop, trade activities would come to a standstill. He asked the government to pay attention to the situation in Kunduz.

Kunduz police chief Abdul Hameed Hameedi confirmed kidnapping incidents had increased and said a new strategy was being evolved to address the issue.

€œSpecial arrangements have been adopted to arrest those involved in kidnappings,€ he said.

Hameedi termed the situation in Kunduz as €˜normal€™ and added there was no major security threat.
