US senators push to stop support of Arab coalition in Yemen
(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Washington, March. 1 (Petra) -- US lawmakers have submitted a draft resolution calling for an end to US military support for the Saudi-led coalition against Houthis in Yemen.
Senators Bernie Sanders, Mike Lee, and Chris Murphy said in a joint statement that their draft will allow, for the first time, the Senate to vote to "withdraw American troops from an unauthorized war".
Washington has been providing the coalition with weapons, intelligence services, and Aerial refueling since 2015.
Sanders, an independent senator that entered the presidential race in 2016 as a Democrate, said : " We believe that, as Congress has not declared war or authorized military force in this conflict, the US involvement in Yemen is unconstitutional and unauthorized and US military support of the Saudi coalition must end." Congress first passed an Authorization to Use Military Force (AUMF), was on Sept. 14, 2001, only three days after the devastating attacks on New York and Washington by Al-Qaeda hijackers.
