Oman- Vendors sell fish illegally on streets in Al Khuwayr, North Hail and Azaiba

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Vendors in some parts of Muscat continue to sell fish in streets in various areas. This, despite a ban introduced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoAF) as per decision issued in December 2014.

Ministry officials have warned traders against violating the decision. Muscat Daily took a tour around busy market places in three areas, and found out that bylanes every evening in Al Khuwayr, North Hail and Azaiba are lined with rows of pick-up trucks stocked with fish. Sale of fish is conducted on these streets.

A customer, Marhoon al Saidi said he prefers to buy fish from these vendors because he thinks it is fresh. 'I prefer to buy fish from these vendors because the catch from the sea is supplied directly to customers. Moreover, I do not have to go all the way to the main market. I check carefully before buying.'

However, another customer, Sultan al Rawahi said such markets are a nuisance. 'These vendors cause traffic congestion and the whole place stinks due to fish waste discarded during sale. I wish vendors operated from kiosks and follow health and environmental guidelines.'

A vendor at one of these markets said that they ensure fish sold is good and maintain cleanliness. 'We have a lot of stock and it sells faster in these areas. Many people prefer buying fish in these areas because it is more convenient for them. We ensure the place is clean before wrapping up.' Eng Yahya al Hadidi, director of department of fish market regulation at the MoAF said, 'According to the Decision No 312/2014, it is illegal to sell fish outside markets and ports specified by the ministry.'

Eng Hadidi added, 'Selling fish on the streets can be hazardous to environment and health as vendors throw fish waste into the streets. Also, selling fish other than in areas specified by the ministry negatively affects sellers who abide by the rules.' MoAF regularly conducts campaigns to restrict such practices and advises sellers to abide by the government's decision or face legal action, he said.
