Priyanka's 'revealing' picture on Assam tourism calendar irks politicians
20 Feb 2018

Priyanka Chopra found herself mired in a fresh controversy once again after several politicians raised objections over her picture in the Assam tourism calendar.

According to some Congress MLAs, PeeCee's 'inappropriate' outfit in the image is degrading the state's culture.

The actress, who is the brand ambassador of Assam, was last year targeted for labeling Sikkim as 'insurgency-hit'.

Priyanka's picture has offended Congress members Rupjyoti Kurmi (MLA from Mariani), Roseline Tirkey (MLA from Sarupathar), and Nandita Das (MLA from Boko) and they want her sacked as the brand ambassador of Assam.

In their view, the actress has failed to put up with the culture of Assam.

"The government should preserve the respect of the Assamese society. Frock is not an Assamese attire and the calendar pictures were not sober at all. They could have used the traditional mekhela chador. This is the reason we have protested against the calendar," Kurmi said.

Counter attack

Chairman of the Assam Tourism Development Corporation, Jayanta Malla Baruah, has termed the objections over Priyanka's picture as baseless.

"Priyanka Chopra is an international figure and her presentation in the calendar has not diminished Assam's culture in any way," he said.

Taking a dig at the Congress MLAs, Baruah quipped if they would like to see Priyanka Gandhi on the calendar.
