UAE- RAK, Ajman residents affirm need for smoke detectors

Emirati nationals and residents in Ras Al Khaimah and Ajman have said that smoke detectors are a must in every house.

Jassim Al Tunaiji, an Emirati national based in Ras Al Khaimah, said he is well aware about fire safety, indicating that smoke detectors are life-saving and help detect and curb fire as early as possible.

"Should the mother of the kids be alerted of the smoke early enough, she might have been able to take them to safety and rescue their lives."

He added that he and all family members can simply use the fire extinguishers installed at home. "I gave my kids some training on the proper use of fire extinguishers."

Al Tunaiji told Khaleej Times that he is planning to have smoke detectors installed in his house. "Every house must be equipped with fire extinguishers and all family members should be aware of how to use it so that they can save their life and others.

"All electric heaters, cell phones, chargers, and electric devices with heavy loads must be switched off before going to sleep."

The kitchen gas cylinder must also be tightly closed after cooking in order to avoid gas leak risks, he pointed out. "Emergency exits, be they in houses or offices must be available to help save people's life."

Any item that might obstruct entrances or exits must be removed to ensure smooth access, he said. "I have already contacted some of the accredited companies to have smoke detectors installed in my house."

Jawaher Saif Al Kumaiti, the Emirati young woman who recently saved the life of a heavy truck driver on fire following an accident, told Khaleej Times she has been trained to put out fires.

"I am well aware about fire safety and gave some training to all my family members.

"Though we do not have smoke detectors home, I and all my family members know how to use fire extinguishers."
