Driver arrested after hitting florist, old man and maid

A 51-year-old driver was arrested for a negligent act causing grievous harm after crashing his car into Marine Terrace market on Saturday and injuring a stall-owner, her elderly male friend and an Indonesian maid who was a customer.

At 12:34pm on December 9, a white Toyota Corolla Altis skidded straight into a florist at Block 50A at the Marine Terrace market, Shin Min Daily News reported.

The flower vendor, 58, was hit and knocked unconscious, while her friend, 65, sustained severe injuries to his left foot after the car ran over it.

The Indonesian domestic worker, 30, a regular customer of the florist, saw the sedan coming. She tripped and fell to the floor inside the shop while trying to escape. When she was rescued, the maid was still very startled.

All three were sent to Changi General Hospital, where the vendor regained consciousness and the elderly man had his left middle toe amputated.

The 51-year-old driver told police the accident was caused by a mechanical fault. But police arrested him and their investigation into the mishap is ongoing.
