US: protected status of Haitian immigrants to be terminated
(MENAFN) Following a destructive earthquake, immigrants from the Caribbean were given a protected status in 2010. However, the United States plans to end the programme which offers at least 50,000 immigrants from Haiti a safeguard against deportation.
The Trump administration claimed that the situation in the nation has improved which means immigrants can now return with no risk at hand. It also confirmed that their protected status is scheduled to be terminated in July 2019 which provides a timeline of eighteen months for Haitians to either return or legalize their immigration status in the United States.
The US Department of Homeland Security issued a statement saying "those extraordinary but temporary conditions caused by the 2010 earthquake no longer exist, significant steps have been taken to improve the stability and quality of life for Haitian citizens, and Haiti is able to safely receive traditional levels of returned citizens."
