LightAide for Students With Visual Impairments
My students are inspiring. They are all blind or visually impaired. Many of my students are from low-income homes, and over 80% of the students in our district receive free or reduced-price lunch. We are constantly challenging our students to step out of their comfort zones. This can be challenging for a student with a visual impairment.
My Project
My preschool students have a wide array of needs. All of them are blind or visually impaired and many have additional disabilities. It is difficult to find equipment that is meaningful and engaging for them.
The LightAide is a large light box that provides an enlarged, tactile learning experience for children with low vision.
The children can use this device to develop their cognitive skills. Students can use the LightAide to improve their understanding of cause and effect, alphabet and numbers, tracking for pre-reading, sequencing and organizational skills, and turn taking for social situations. The product website describes the LightAide as "bright and engaging," the LightAide creates a variety of interactive displays of color that support core learning goals and help instill the building blocks of literacy and mathematical concepts in learners with low vision, cognitive disabilities and other special needs. The LightAide is very versatile and would be a valued tool for our students.
