Australia holds emergency meeting with China's ambassador

(MENAFN) Australian Foreign Minister had held an emergency meeting with the Chinese ambassador regarding Canberra's failure to confirm an extradition treaty with China.

Previously, Australia had cancelled a vote to finalize the extradition treaty with China, after 10 years of signing it, with the government had a defeat amid opposition on the grounds of China's humanitarian record.

However, Bishop met the Chinese ambassador in Australia, and an Australian newspaper said that the ambassador expressed disappointment at the cancelled vote.

On the other hand, Cheng Jingye said: "We hope that Australia keeps in mind the broader picture of bilateral relations and both countries' interests and can continue to promote the relevant domestic process so this treaty can go into enforcement as soon as possible."
