Egypt- MECC signed a contract with GAS to establish Authorized Service Center

Karim El Badry, chairperson of Maadi Engineering Cars Company (MECC)—which was involved in the corruption case with the former governor of Helwan—said that his company was negatively affected by the bribery case, especially since the Mercedes company cancelled an agreement signed with them after the announcement of the corruption case.

He added that according to the policies of Mercedes, the company must keep distance from such cases that contradict with its policies of committing to credibility and honesty in its dealings.

El Badry explained, however, that the company is keen to continue work with the MECC centre, which is considered the biggest car maintenance centre for Mercedes in the Egyptian market and enjoys a great level of expertise.

The German Auto Service (GAS) company established a new entity titled the 'Authorized Service Center' and signed a contract with MECC to supply original spare parts in order to avoid any damage to its business. The company is employing 200 employees—engineers as well as skilled and trained technicians.

El Badry praised the efforts of the Administrative Control Authority (ACA) and the Public Prosecution in dealing with the bribery case. He stressed that all the actions taken by the investigation authorities confirm that, undoubtedly, everyone can be held accountable.

He called upon the judiciary to eliminate corruption, so that the business community will have the best investment opportunities and a good business climate in the coming period.

MECC managed to maintain its reputation and position in the market by the efforts of its employees who care about working in an organized legal environment and applying transparency and commitment principles. MECC also provides the best services to Mercedes despite the losses suffered by the company.

El Badry said that MECC is ready to legalise their status and deal legally with local councils in regard to the continuation of land subordination to the company under the usufruct right as it was previously. The company never violated its obligations to repay the value of the usufruct since the date it started operations in the market in 1983.

The company is also ready to go through the land ownership procedures by contracting with local councils at a fair price agreed upon between them. This is to avoid affecting the MECC negatively, as the company chose to support transparency, fight corruption, and reveal those who are involved in illegal profits through a corrupted administrative system that protected corrupt employees from legal accountability.

El Badry called upon the public prosecution to protect MECC from the corruption of the local councils, and from any attempts that target putting pressure on its positions in one way or another.

El Badry also also called Maadi district council to consider the request submitted to the secretariat of the Cairo Governorate, on the speed of the legalization of the land, and to work on this file as soon as possible.
