Qatar- 'The Colours of Desert' opens at Katara

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) From surrealist paintings to silk art to Arabic calligraphy-inspired paintings, 44 stunning artworks by seven artists reflect thematic and cultural diversity in an exhibition aptly dubbed ‘The Colours of Desert' which opened on Tuesday at Katara.
Those in attendance at the launch were left in awe by the product of the skillful hands and imaginative minds of the participating artists from diverse backgrounds.
The surrealist paintings of Kuwaiti Fouad Al Emadi do not fail to impress with concrete metaphor expressed through well-defined lines and bold colours, while Egyptian Khaled Al Mesawy's fusion of Arabic calligraphy and fine art resulting in pictorial compositions depicting famous figures appeal to many art enthusiasts.
The collection is just a small fraction of what to expect from 68 members of the Middle-East Art and Silk Printers (MAPS) on their fourth annual group exhibition.
'MAPS has members from different nationalities coming together to create art under one roof. Like the desert's different colours, this exhibition witnesses various nationalities showing different cultures through their works, MAPS founder Rashmi Agarwal told local media.
Agarwal, who hails from India, is a silk painter who for 13 years has been teaching the centuries-old art in Qatar and displaying its dynamism from fine art to fashion art through her large body of work.
'Silk painting is beautiful. It is totally different from canvas painting because it requires special dyes in creating various pieces such as wall and fashion art. Silk is a national fibre and one of the most luxurious fabrics in the world, she explained.
Her collection under the theme 'Moments is a riot of colours depicting how the world began and evolved.
Other MAPS members who whose works feature at the show are Abdulrahman Abdulah Al Dorani and Moudhi Al Hajri from Qatar, Ziyad Al Ubaidi from Iraq and Sylvia Gomes from South Africa.
MAPS is a chapter of US-based international organisation SPIN. More than 100 artists from all over the world will come to Doha for their next exhibition, added Agarwal. The exhibition was inaugurated in the presence of the Deputy General Manager of the Cultural Village Foundation-Katara, Ahmad Al Sayed and the Ambassador of India P Kumaran. The exhibition is open until December 27 from 10am to 10pm.
