US accepts 12,500 refugees, announces more aid for Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Sept 27 (KUNA) -- The Obama Administration announced on Tuesday it has exceeded its goal of taking in 10,000 Syrian refugees this year and has in fact accepted 12,500 so far.

"This administration has been very clear that we want to bring more Syrians. So, my own guidance to our staff is that we want to bring even more than we brought this year without having a target," Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration Anne C. Richard told reporters.

However, no goal has been set for 2017, she noted.

The Administration also pledged another USD 364 million in aid for displaced Syrians, bringing the total contribution to USD 5.9 billion since 2011.

The funds will go toward food, shelter, safe drinking water, medical care, humanitarian protection services, and other urgent relief for some 4.8 million Syrians, the State Department said. (end) ys.gb
