AMMAN —Al Ghad— Writer and columnist Nahed Hattar was assassinated early on Sunday in front of the Courthouse in Amman by a 49 year old who was apprehended by the authorities on site. Hattar took several bullets to the head. Residents in Fuheis have convened in protest against the crime, and are demonstrating peacefully in the area.

Attendees at the convention blamed the Premier Hani Mulqi for the assassination, and called for agitators to stand trial for being accessory to the crime. The convention featured parliamentary, tribal, political, cultural, and other figures, who also called for the Prime Minister";s resignation,

According to Petra, the Jordan News Agency, government speaker Mohammad Momani, on behalf of the government, denounced the assassination, as the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs stated that the act does not represent Islam, nor does the killer.

The Public Security Directorate (PSD) stated that Hattar was transported to the hospital, but had died before arriving at the Bashir public hospital, where his body was inspected by the Coroner";s office, who confirmed Hattar took 5 shots; 3 to the head, one to the chest, and one in his right arm.

Additionally, authorities explained that the killer, who had been out of the country recently and has re-entered Jordan from a neighbouring country on Saturday, is an engineer with the Ministry of Education, and has worked as a cleric at the Awqaf ministry until he was fired in 2009 for harbouring extremist ideas and causing agitation and dispute at the mosque where he served.

Hatter on the other hand was bailed out on the 18th of September, after having been apprehended in the pretext of sharing a comic drawing on his Facebook page carrying insults to Islam and the divine entity per orders of Prime Minister Dr Hani Mulqi.
