Morocco- Royal Cabinet Slams Benabdellah's Attempt to Involve King's Advisers in Elections

(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Morocco's Royal Cabinet has slammed Moroccan Minister Nabil Benabdellah's attempt to involve an adviser to King Mohammed VI in the electoral campaign ahead of the legislative elections scheduled to be held on October 7.

'The latest statement of Nabil Benabdellah, Minister of Housing and Urban Policy and Secretary General of the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS-majority), is a political diversion tool at election time, which requires refraining from launching unsubstantiated statements,' the Royal Cabinet said Tuesday.

Nabil Benabdellah told Moroccan weekly Al Ayam that his party 'has no problem with the Authenticity and Modernity party (PAM-opposition), but with the person who is behind the party', in a tacit reference to Fouad Ali El Hima, Advisor to King Mohammed VI.

Benabdallah went on to add add that this person is 'the founder of the party which embodies authoritarianism'.

'It seems clear that this statement, which comes following other equally irresponsible statements of Nabil Benabdellah, is only a political diversion tool at election time, which requires refraining from unsubstantiated statements', the Royal Cabinet pointed out in a statement.

This election time requires 'refraining from using concepts that undermine the reputation of the country and the integrity and credibility of institutions, in an attempt to win votes and voters' sympathy', the statement added.

'These statements are inconsistent with the provisions of the Constitution and the laws that govern the relationship between the monarchical institution and all national institutions and bodies, including political parties', the Royal Cabinet stressed.

'By issuing this explanatory statement, the Royal Cabinet would like to remove any doubt about the statements given their important and dangerous nature, especially that they come from a government member and the targeted person currently holds the position of HM the King's Advisor and has no longer any relationship with politics', the same source noted.

The Royal Cabinet pointed out that 'HM the King's Advisors act only within the framework of their duties following the high specific and direct instructions of HM the King'.

'It should be noted that this case concerns only the person who made those statements and has no relation with the PPS party known for its historic role of activism and its constructive contribution to the national political and institutional process', the statement concluded.
