Top Periodontist Comments on Possible Saliva Test for Periodontal Disease

(MENAFNEditorial) :

New York, NY, July 20, 2016 - Dr. Daria Royzman, a highly experienced periodontist at D & D Periodontal Associates, welcomed the possible development of an early and reliable test for periodontal disease as latediagnosis is often a problem.Dr. Royzman often sees patients with severe periodontitis and who may need significant treatment to help restore gum health.

Recently a research team in the UK was awarded a grant from the Oral and Dental Research Trust to help develop a quick and reliable saliva test forperiodontal disease. The hope is that in time this test would be available in regular dental offices or as an over-the-counter product which would make itextremely easy for the general public to check their own dental health. The funding will allow the research team to identify biomarkers of periodontaldisease which would be used to develop this test.

Commenting on this potential development Dr. Royzman said ''This is certainly an interesting idea. One of the problems with periodontal disease is that it isoften referred to as being a ‘silent disease"; because the early symptoms are often overlooked or easy to ignore. Any development that helps raise awarenessof this disease amongst the general public is to be welcomed. As a periodontal practice, we often see patients who have extremely advanced periodontaldisease. By this stage the condition often cannot be completely cured and we have to provide ongoing treatment to manage it. It is quite distressing, especially as when caught in the early stages, periodontal disease is completely curable.”

Periodontitis is an inflammatory condition caused by bacterial infection. It affects the gum tissue as well as the structures supporting the teeth includingligaments and bone. Periodontal disease has also been linked to serious health conditions and it affects a large proportion of American adults. This diseaseis a major cause of tooth loss.

''I";d urge anyone who is worried about their gum health to schedule an evaluation with a periodontist who has received years"; of additional training intreating this condition” said Dr. Royzman. ''Symptoms that shouldn";t be ignored include bleeding or swollen gums, noticing teeth look longer than before dueto gum recession. As the disease progresses it causes teeth to loosen and move, potentially changing the fit of dental appliances and the way teeth bitetogether.”
