Turkey- Dominican govt agrees to review health workers' demands

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) >The Dominican government on Thursday initiated a dialogue with health care workers to review demands for better working conditions and salaries.

Health Minister Altagracia Guzman Marcelino held a meeting with representatives of employees and agreed to a follow up next week the same group that will include Minister of the Presidency Gustavo Montalvo.

The government’s decision to listen to health care workers came after dozens of employees marched to the headquarters of the health Ministry and threatened a three-day strike if their claims were not heard.

Marcelino said she was unaware of the threat but appreciated that Waldo Ariel Suero president of the Dominican Medical Association (CMD) called off the job actions following the meeting.

“The government has never prevented dialogue but the interest above anything else is to protect the health of the population” said Marelino. Problems in the health system must be analyzed and addressed by all sectors without harming service users she added.

During the meeting both sides reviewed workers’ demands that include a 60 percent salary increase for doctors and investment in the health care sector at 5 percent of GDP among other claims.

The CMD and health employees have conducted sporadic strikes marches formed human chain and other job actions during the past year in an effort to force the government to listen to demands.
