Kuwait committed to supporting Palestinians - Kuwaiti official

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Kuwait's international and humanitarian efforts on putting a stop to the recent Israeli assault on Gaza were emphasised by Ministry of Justice Undersecretary Abdulaziz Al-Majid on Monday.

Kuwait's chief representative was speaking to delegates at the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) currently taking place in Tehran.

He said "Kuwait fully acknowledges that achieving the just demands of nations for self-determination and the freedom of choice, and enabling the means for a secure peace and existence are matters that represent, in their goals, the main pillars of human civilisation, which has been called for by all religions." This formed the basis of "the need to add the Palestinian issue to the organisation's agenda since its 27th session in Singapore, 1988, up until this current session," he said.

"We cannot ignore what the occupying Israeli authorities are carrying out of complete disregard to international treaties and principles on human rights and in regards to the right of self-determination for peoples under occupation.

"It is from this perspective that the State of Kuwait has condemned the recent Israeli aggression on Gaza, including the massacres committed on the Palestinian people and the destruction of infrastructure," he added.

It is due to this that Kuwait, which chairs the current Arab League term, had taken it upon itself to work with UN and other international agencies to put a stop to this - ensuring it is not repeated - and to lift the siege on Gaza, he said.

Kuwait backed the Egyptian-brokered ceasefire initiative and calls for all sides to commit to this initiative, he added.

On the discussion of fundamentalist terrorism, also on the topics of discussion, he explained that its "repercussions have not known borders or faith," adding "there is no doubt that eradicating terrorism also means sequentially tackling crimes that support it." The official called on coordination "internationally and regionally to face these crimes at their root causes" and to "work to protect the security and stability of our national, regional and global communities from their dangerous repercussions." He, thus, announced Kuwait's intention at the talks to focus on plans for a comprehensive agreement on international terrorism.

Other issues Kuwait intends to address are matters related to the Law of the Sea treaty, the treatment of refugees and research conducted on implementing national regulations outside of borders, including penalties imposed on third parties.
