Pervez Musharraf's plea against prosecutor dismissed

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The three-judge bench headed by justice faisal arab had reserved its ruling on akram sheikh?s appointment on march 26.

the special court constituted to try gen. (retd) pervez musharraf on friday dismissed a petition filed against the appointment of akram sheikh as chief prosecutor in the case.

sheikh will retain his position as the head prosecutor in this case against former president pervez musharraf.

the three-judge bench headed by justice faisal arab had reserved its ruling on akram sheikh’s appointment on march 26.

on many occasions musharraf’s legal team had alleged that the prosecutor was biased against the former president dubbing him a “persecutor” rather than a prosecutor.

on march 31 musharraf was formally charged for subverting and circumventing the constitution by imposing emergency on november 3 2007. musharraf had rejected all the charges levelled against him.

hearings of the treason trial will resume on april 24 and will be held on a daily basis from that day forward.

musharraf’s lawyer anwar mansoor khan alleged that sheikh had earlier expressed his interest to prosecute the former military strongman under article 6 of the constitution.

khan also challenged sheikh’s appointment in the court besides filing two other petition that the appointment was not legitimate.

musharraf was indicted last month for high treason and for suspending the constitution when he declared emergency rule in 2007.

he pleaded not guilty to all charges.

he assumed power in pakistan in a bloodless coup when he dismissed the government of then prime minister nawaz sharif in 1999.
