Backlash Erupts Over Trump’s Use of Anime Imagery Without Authorization
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump is facing criticism following backlash over his use of popular anime-style imagery without authorization, according to reports.
The controversy erupted after Trump shared an AI-generated video on his Truth Social platform on June 6, showing himself reimagined as Naruto Uzumaki, the main character from the widely known manga and anime series Naruto. The post quickly drew attention and criticism in Japan.
Nearly 20,000 people in Japan reportedly signed an online petition protesting the post, with fans arguing that the character’s image was used without permission and that it misappropriated a culturally significant figure, according to reports.
Online reactions highlighted concerns over intellectual property and the unauthorized use of well-known fictional characters.
Separately, critics also referenced an earlier incident in March involving the use of imagery from Yu-Gi-Oh! in a White House-related video connected to strikes on Iran, which was shared on the US platform X.
A statement from the official Yu-Gi-Oh! account at the time emphasized that “the original creators and anime staff were not involved in any way, and no permission was given for the use of the intellectual property in question.”
The latest episode has intensified discussion in Japan over the use of anime and manga content in political messaging and AI-generated media.
