Qatar Vows Continued Mediation Efforts In Afghanistan, Other Conflicts

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) "> KABUL (Pajhwok): Qatar has reaffirmed its commitment to mediation, dialogue and preventive diplomacy to reduce tensions and maintain international peace and security, saying it will continue its efforts in Afghanistan and other conflict-affected regions.

Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported that Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, made the remarks during a United Nations General Assembly meeting on“Strengthening the role of mediation in the peaceful settlement of disputes, conflict prevention and resolution” at UN headquarters in New York.

She said mediation remained one of the most effective tools for the peaceful resolution of disputes, crisis prevention and building sustainable peace, adding that the growing complexity of conflicts worldwide had increased the need to strengthen such approaches.

The Qatari envoy said preventive diplomacy, mediation and the peaceful settlement of disputes were fundamental principles of her country's foreign policy, and that Doha was proud of its long-standing role in these efforts.

Referring to Afghanistan, she said Qatar's mediation ultimately led to the signing of the peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban in Doha in February 2020.

Sheikha Alya also highlighted Qatar's role in mediation efforts to secure a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and called on all parties to honour their commitments and facilitate the uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian assistance.

She added that Qatar continued to support peace processes in other regions, including eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and would back further mediation efforts aimed at reducing tensions and strengthening regional and global stability.

Qatar also welcomed Pakistan's mediation efforts between the United States and Iran, expressing support for all diplomatic initiatives aimed at easing regional tensions.
