Christo-Inspired Artwork By French Artist JR Delayed Because Of Storm

A new public artwork by French artist JR has been pushed back after severe winds damaged part of the installation over the River Seine in Paris. La Caverne du Pont Neuf, a tribute to Christo and Jeanne-Claude, was scheduled to open this weekend on Pont Neuf, the city's oldest bridge, but the launch has now been postponed to an unspecified date while the damage is assessed.

The work takes its cue from Christo and Jeanne-Claude's 1985 intervention The Pont Neuf Wrapped, translating that landmark gesture into JR's own visual language. Described as a trompe l'oeil wrapping, the installation makes the 419-year-old bridge appear as a rocky outcropping, a reference to the quarries from which the bridge's stone was originally extracted. In JR's release, the project is framed as a meeting point between“the raw and wild” and“the refined elegance of the City of Light,” a contrast that gives the piece its conceptual charge.

The installation also includes a sound element created by Thomas Bangalter, one of the two members behind Daft Punk. It had been scheduled to remain on view from June 6 through June 28, though those dates may change depending on the extent of the damage.

JR's team, the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation, and the Amicale des Ponts de Paris all issued a statement about the postponement. Once the work is unveiled, it is expected to be visible from multiple vantage points: on foot or by bicycle, from the banks of the Seine, from nearby bridges and quays, and from the water via riverboats, shuttles, and cruises.

For a project so closely tied to the city's built history, the delay underscores how vulnerable large-scale public art can be to the elements - even in the center of Paris.
