Afghanistan Elected Vice President Of UN General Assembly's 81St Session

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) Afghanistan has been elected as one of the vice presidents of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Afghanistan has been elected as one of the vice presidents of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, according to Nasir Ahmad Faiq, the acting head of Afghanistan's mission to the United Nations.

Faiq said the General Assembly on Tuesday elected its president, vice presidents and members of the bureau for the upcoming session.

He welcomed the election of Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh as president of the 81st session and expressed hope that Afghanistan would play a constructive role in advancing the work of the Assembly.

“Afghanistan looks forward to working closely with the president-elect and member states in supporting the objectives and responsibilities of the General Assembly,” Faiq said in a statement posted on X.

The appointment marks a diplomatic role for Afghanistan at the United Nations despite the continued political dispute over the country's representation following the Taliban's return to power in 2021.

The United Nations has not formally recognized the Taliban administration as Afghanistan's government, and the country's UN seat continues to be held by diplomats appointed by the former Western-backed republic. Faiq has represented Afghanistan at the UN since the collapse of the previous government.

The General Assembly is the UN's main deliberative body, bringing together all 193 member states to discuss international peace and security, development, human rights and other global issues.

Afghanistan remains a major focus of UN discussions because of its humanitarian crisis, economic challenges and human rights concerns. UN agencies estimate that millions of Afghans continue to require humanitarian assistance amid funding shortages and the return of large numbers of migrants from neighboring countries.

The upcoming General Assembly session is also expected to address a range of global conflicts and crises, including the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as international efforts to strengthen development and humanitarian cooperation.
